Kuala Lumpur, 10 June 2025 – The Data Science Institute (DASCIN) successfully facilitated a Green IT Awareness Workshop for the Dutch Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, underscoring the growing importance of sustainable digital practices in modern diplomatic and corporate environments. The workshop was designed to increase awareness of the environmental impact of information technology and to guide participants toward actionable solutions for a greener digital future.
The initiative aligns with the Dutch government’s broader commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. During the session, embassy staff were introduced to the principles of Green IT, including the energy consumption of hardware, the environmental cost of cloud computing, and the importance of sustainable procurement and lifecycle management of IT assets.
A key highlight of the workshop was an interactive carbon footprint assessment, where embassy personnel evaluated the environmental impact of their individual and collective IT usage – ranging from daily email habits to the energy consumption of devices and data storage. With support from DASCIN facilitators, participants interpreted the results and developed a customized Green IT Action Plan tailored to the embassy’s operational environment.
The action plan includes concrete steps such as:
- Reducing unnecessary digital storage and promoting data hygiene.
- Consolidating and optimizing hardware use.
- Prioritizing energy-efficient devices and responsible e-waste disposal.
- Raising internal awareness of sustainable IT behaviors among all staff.
“We are delighted to support the Dutch Embassy in taking a proactive approach to digital sustainability,” said Jan-Willem Middelburg, President at DASCIN. “Corporate and institutional IT is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions. Through Green IT Awareness workshops like these, we aim to empower organizations with the knowledge and tools to make meaningful, measurable changes.”
This Green IT Awareness workshop marks a significant step in the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into all facets of its operations, including digital infrastructure and IT governance. It also serves as a model for other institutions seeking to align their technology practices with the principles of environmental responsibility.
